In Great Britain, most cars, light passenger vehicles and many light goods vehicles need their first MOT by the third anniversary of registration, and then every year after that. The MOT checks that important parts of the vehicle meet the required road safety and environmental standards, but it is not the same as a service and does not assess the general condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Class 4 and Class 7 MOT Testing

ST Garage offers MOT testing for Class 4 and Class 7 vehicles.

Class 4 covers most cars and many smaller passenger and light commercial vehicles, while Class 7 applies to certain goods vehicles up to 3,500kg design gross weight (DGW).

What Does an MOT Check?

During the MOT, a number of important vehicle systems and components are inspected to make sure they meet the legal standards. GOV.UK’s driver guidance lists checks covering areas such as body and structure, fuel system, exhaust emissions, exhaust system, seatbelts, seats, doors, mirrors, brakes, tyres and wheels, registration plates, lights, bonnet, wipers and washers, windscreen, horn, steering and suspension, VIN, visible electrical wiring and the battery.

Common MOT inspection areas include:

  • Exhaust and emissions
The exhaust system must be secure, complete and without serious leaks, and emissions must meet the standards that apply to the vehicle’s age and fuel type.
  • Seat belts
Mandatory seat belts must be present, in good condition, operate properly and be attached securely.
  • Steering and suspension
These are checked for condition, operation and signs of wear, damage or inappropriate repair.
  • Windscreen, wipers and washers
These must allow the driver a clear view of the road and be in proper working condition.
  • Bonnet catch
The bonnet must close and latch securely.
  • Horn
The horn must work properly and be suitable for the vehicle.
  • Number plates
Plates are checked for condition, secure attachment, correct colour, and correctly formed and spaced characters.
  • Lights
Lights are checked for condition, operation and correct aim where applicable.
  • Brakes
The system is checked for condition, operation and performance. MOT guidance also includes checks for ABS, ESC and certain brake warning lights where fitted.
  • Tyres and wheels
These are inspected for condition, security, tyre size, type and tread depth.
  • Mirrors
Mirrors are checked for the required number, condition and security.
  • Doors and seats
Front doors must open properly, and seats must be secure with seat backs able to lock upright.
  • Fuel system and body structure
The fuel system is checked for leaks and secure components, while the body and structural areas are inspected for excessive corrosion or damage in relevant areas.

What the MOT Does Not Cover

An MOT is a legal roadworthiness and emissions check at the time of the test. It is not a substitute for regular vehicle servicing and does not assess the general mechanical condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox.

What Should You Bring?

For most customers, the main requirement is simply to bring the vehicle to an approved MOT test centre. GOV.UK says MOTs must be carried out by an approved centre displaying the blue MOT sign with three white triangles.

If your vehicle has a locking fuel cap, it is sensible to make sure the key is available, because the fuel cap may need to be opened during the test.

What Happens If My Vehicle Fails?

If a vehicle fails its MOT, it means one or more items did not meet the legal standard required at the time of test. The next step is to have the faults repaired and arrange any necessary retest. GOV.UK also provides a process for appealing the result if you believe a mistake has been made.
